We're Up and Running! |
July 7- 2008 - The farm is really producing now and weekly CSA pickups are bountiful. This past Sunday afternoon was our first market day where we offered extra produce for sale to the public. June 1 - 2008 - Our first CSA pickup is happening this week! Members will receive Swiss Chard, lettuce mix, spinach, radishes and Tatsoi. Check out our weekly CSA newsletters on the CSA membership page. May 13, 2008 - The farmshed garden is planted with herbs & native plants. Ground is being turned as conditions permit. Sowing and transplanting continues in earnest. Beets, potatoes, tomatoes, peas, carrots, brocolli, brocolli rabe, cabbage, kale, chard, radishes and other greens are in the ground. We think we are past the last frost of the season, so full steam ahead! April 28, 2008 - Lots of seeds are sprouting in the fields, and thousands of cool weather crop seedlings have been transplanted from the greenhouse into the ground. More ground is being turned as weather permits. The Farmshed Garden planting boxes have been built and filled with soil, ready for planting. April 14, 2008 - We've begun to till and plant! Peas, carrots & greens are sown, 1000's of seedlings are in the greenhouse. Farmshed fence is up and garden beds are built. April 1, 2008 - The soil has been turned for the first time! Check out the progress pages to see the staff wrestling with our new tiller. Farmshed is awaiting doors and hardware, solar electric deer fencing is in place, propane heater in the greenhouse is working, seedlings are booming! March 17, 2008 - The farmshed siding is nearly complete, water and electric lines are installed and deer fencing is up. Seeds have been sown for scallions, celleriac, cabbage, leeks, flowers and hot peppers. Farm staff is transporting flats of seedlings to and from the greenhouse daily to avoid cold nighttime temps while we wait for electric service to be hooked up by PECO in April. Follow progress on the farm. February 19, 2008 - The green house is up, the well has been dug, and construction has begun on the potting/equipment shed. Seed orders have been placed. Onions and tomatoes have been started. January 23, 2008 - We are breaking ground! Excavation has begun for the farm shed and greenhouse pad sites. CSA applications for our first year's memberships (30 members will be selected by lottery) are flowing in. January 2008 - We have a name! It's Rushton Farm. Site development has begun, with locations of the shed, greenhouse, production fields and children's garden marked with flags. Excavation and well drilling will take place at the end of January. Follow progress on the farm. December 2007 - A lease has been signed on a six acre parcel located at the corner of Goshen and Delchester Roads. This beautiful site is adjacent to the 30 acre Rushton Woods, which was recently donated to the trust by Audubon. We are currently working on site plans and designs for the vegetable fields, children's/chef/granny garden and a distribution and tractor shed. Fred's watching the weather and will be turning the ground for the first time when we get a dry spell. November 2007 - We are excited to announce the launch of our long awaited Community Farm Program. It was a year ago that the Trustees engaged five MBA students from the Temple University Fox School of Business to study the feasibility of developing a sustainable farming venture under the Trust umbrella....
